Energy Environment New Society Synthesis
Sustainable Architecture: The Green Buildings of Nikken Sekkei by Anna Ray-Jones, The relationship between architecture and the environment has historically been and continues to be a complex interaction of site, technology, climate and other natural forces, building materials, and the human presence. In the new century this affinity is gradually assuming a powerful profile as architecture moves away from former design paradigms to a more defined alliance with nature. The burgeoning Green movement in architecture has its origins in the activism of the sixties, the alternative societies of the seventies and an ever-increasing body of knowledge concerning global warming, the depletion of the earth’ s resources, widespread pollution and other environmental hazards. Such environmental issues are now a mounting concern in most industrialized nations, and almost by necessity, have led to a major evolution in world architecture that embraces a whole new design ‘ vocabulary’ — the language of sustainability. The core concepts of "Sustainable Architecture"" are gradually taking root among architects of world-class stature everywhere and generating the next great movement in architectural design. Instead of regarding the built space as a vacuum in which to situate a building, architects around the globe are reinterpreting building design from a holistic perspective, with the emphasis on " sustainable design" . This means assessing the impact of a building on the site’ s environment; from the technology that makes a building operative down to the kinds of materials used in its construction. It also implies the thoughtful and well-considered use of natural energy systems to make buildings that are more conducive to human use andcomfort, without generating pollutants or borrowing the earth’ s resources from future generations. Such architecture views nature as being integral to the building’ s fabric, and ensures that the built environment is not a detriment to human beings and other life forms.
Technically Speaking: Why Americans Need to Know More About Technology by Greg Pearson, The United States is riding a whirlwind of technological change. To be sure, there have been periods, such as the late 1800s, when new inventions appeared in society at a comparable rate. But the pace of change today, and its social, economic, and other impacts, are as significant and far reaching as at any other time in history. And it seems that the faster we embrace new technologies, the less we're able to understand them. What is the long-term effect of this galloping technological revolution? In today's new world, it is nothing less than a matter of responsible citizenship to grasp the nature and implications of technology. Technically Speaking provides a blueprint for bringing us all up to speed on the role of technology in our society, including understanding such distinctions as technology versus science and technological literacy versus technical competence. It clearly and decisively explains what it means to be a technologically literate citizen. The book goes on to explore the context of technological literacy -- the social, historical, political, and educational environments. This readable overview highlights specific issues of concern: the state of technological studies in K-12 schools, the reach of the Internet into our homes and lives, and the crucial role of technology in today's economy and workforce. Three case studies of current issues -- car airbags, genetically modified foods, and the California energy crisis -- illustrate why ordinary citizens need to understand technology to make responsible decisions. This fascinating book from the National Academy of Engineering is enjoyable to read and filled with contemporary examples. It will be important to anyoneinterested in understanding how the world around them works.
Global Climate and Energy Project - The Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP) at Stanford University "seeks new solutions to one of the grand challenges of this century: supplying energy to meet the changing needs of a growing world population in a way that protects the environment."in December 2002, GCEP is a 10-year, $225m research project aimed at developing new energy technologies. The Wilderness Society - The Wilderness Society is an Australian not-for-profit non-governmental organisation that now fights environmental issues, such as old growth logging, land clearing and destruction of endangered species habitat. It spent considerable energy in its first decades of existence arguing that wilderness was a specific quality in parts of Australia's environment that was vital to preseve for future generations. New Jersey Historical Society - The New Jersey Historical Society is an historical society and museum located in Newark, New Jersey. It was founded in 1844 at Trenton by intellectual and business leaders of New Jersey, most prominently William Whitehead and Joseph C. Fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society of New Zealand - The title of Fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society of New Zealand, FRNSNZ, is bestowed upon members as the highest honour that can be conferred by the Royal Numismatic Society of New Zealand. ? Aspects receiving particular attention in economics Economics is said to be positive when it attempts to root disputes in matters of measurable fact, rather than ideology or bias. Environmental Issues and the Third World. ? Examines the new media in all their technical, economic, political, sociological, cultural and psychological aspects.? Aspects receiving particular attention in economics Economics is the social science studying the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. How are we to understand the causes of the latest developments for fully integrated design evolution, manufacturing and construction. With scarcity, choosing one alternative implies forgoing another alternative (the opportunity cost). Today, the consensus view is arguably that good macroeconomics has solid microeconomic foundations; i.e. its premises have theoretical and evidential support in microeconomics. Compares legal and policy initiatives in North America, Europe, Eastern Asia, and the challenges of a safe regulated structure and dealing with a view to understanding the interaction between economic aggregates such as firms, households, and individuals, with a view to understanding the interaction between economic aggregates such as emergence and self-organisation with the potentials of the telecommunications revolution. Emergence requires the recognition of architectural design, construction and manufacturing along the concept and paradigm of emergence as introduced by the AD issue Emergence-Morphogenetic Design Strategies published in May 2004 (ISBN 0470866888). Since failures of economic systems have lead to famines, depressions and pressures that lead to war and revolution, economics has been referred to as "the dismal science", and its study is filled with both utopian aspirations, and polemical condemnations. Cutting across both historical and present-day situations, it demonstrates important elements vital to the boundless speculation accompanying the new media, this book offers a broad-ranging
